How to Keep Your Jewellery Sparkling
Just like love, jewellery requires patience, care, and a little effort to shine. At Sterns, we know it tells the story of moments that have defined you. Here’s how to make your precious pieces look like new – whether anniversary earrings, a graduation pendant or wedding ring.
General Care:
An Act of Tenderness
• Remove any jewellery before using hand sanitiser or doing chores with harsh chemicals. Let your hands dry completely before putting your jewellery back on. • Unless you’re wearing Tempo Jewellery which is water- and sweatresistant, always remove your jewellery when washing your hands as well as before showering, swimming or exercising, for sports and gardening. • Never spray perfume or make-up setting sprays on jewellery, especially Pearls. • Store jewellery safely and separately in a satin- or velvet-lined jewellery box, or pouch to avoid scratching. Make it all the more special by storing them in an heirloom box, or one engraved with your initials or the date on which you exchanged vows.

• Clean your jewellery regularly to remove dirt, oils and other residues that can dull its brilliance. • Using a soft, lint-free cloth, gently buff away the dirt and oils. A few, light strokes will restore its natural glow, much like how a kind word brings warmth to a relationship. • For a deeper clean, add a few drops of mild dishwashing liquid to a soft toothbrush and lightly brush, creating a lather for 30 seconds. • Rinse the piece thoroughly under lukewarm water. • Place the jewellery piece on a soft facial tissue much like a soft embrace. • Allow to dry naturally in the sun.
Expert Tips
- Avoid harsh chemicals and abrasive cleaners, including toothpaste and hand soaps.
- You should re-plate your Rhodium-plated jewellery every year.
- For extra care, all of our Sterling Silver jewellery is Rhodium-plated to ensure it remains brighter for longer. However, should tarnishing occur over time, use a Silver polishing cloth to remove it.
- For deeper cleaning, use a paste of baking soda and water, or a commercial Silver cleaner.
- Use a lint-free cloth to avoid leaving behind fibres, or use our jewellery cleaners and cloths, available for purchase in store, to clean your jewellery at home.
Protecting your
Pearls and Opals
Pearls and Opals are soft, porous, delicate and require special care. Clean your Pearls with a soft, damp cloth after each wear and avoid soaking them in water or using harsh chemicals. The alcohol in hand sanitiser may cause your Pearls to dull or change colour, while causing visible cracks on your Opal’s surface. Don’t let them come into contact with sanitised skin until it’s completely dry. We suggest waiting five minutes before wear.

Most gemstones and jewellery can be cleaned by soaking your precious pieces in a gentle solution of warm water and mild dishwashing liquid, and using a soft toothbrush to carefully scrub the intricate details.
